Kundalini Symbology

While study and pursuit of the Kundalini is considered part of the 'New Age' repertoire, it's interesting to note that like most things New Age, it's roots are very ancient and actually pervade almost every part of human culture.

Everyday we see symbols of the Kundalini all around us, but because few people are aware of the Kundalini and it's impact, almost no one realizes what they are seeing. While entire books could be written on this subject, I'm only going to give a few (very brief) examples. Due to space constraints I chose not to include any pictures, but much of this is so common that pictorial examples won't be hard to find.

Basically the Kundalini is seen as a serpent coiled at the base of the spine, where upon awakening it flows up the spine and out through the top of the head, thus transforming the student/victim and connecting their 'lower' energy to the 'upper' energy.

One of the most well-known examples of Kundalini is the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Even the simplest Kundalini neophyte can recognize the connecting and combining of the male and female energies (Adam and Eve) with the Kundalini (Serpent) and the "Tree of Life" (which bore the fruit of "knowledge") also seen as the spinal column.

The Caduceus

I'm sure everyone is familiar with the symbol of the medical profession, as represented by the twin serpents entwined around a staff with a knob on top.

This ancient symbol actually represents the 3 energy channels of the body, the Sushumna (represented by the staff and running up the middle of the body), the Ida (representing Lunar, Yin and feminine energy) and the Pingalla (representing male, solar and Yang energy). The Ida and Pingalla are seen as snakes entwined around the Sushumna.

Kundalini in Folklore

According to Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri (http://www.echoedvoices.org/Aug2002/Chakra_Kundalini.html) the folk tales of Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are also illustrations of Kundalini Awakening with the Seven Dwarves seen as the seven chakras and Snow White as a representation of Shakti "who under the good auspices of her kind stepmother, was awakened by Shiva. Shiva disguised as the "prince" who pushes his way through the tamasic brambles to discover her".

It's interesting that symbols of something considered to be hidden and hard to access can actually be found all around us, all the time. An interesting metaphor for the Kundalini, don't you think?

Three Big Ol Tips for Better Sales Letters

Growing up in the South, I used the phrase "big ol'" a lot. Big ol' truck. Big ol' house. Big ol' party. The phrase was one we used when the word "big" just wasn't descriptive enough.

I think the following suggestions qualify as Big Ol' Tips. Look around the Web and you'll find plenty of good sales letter writing tips. But "big" just doesn't do these justice.

Here are three big ol' tips for better sales letters.

Big Ol' Tip #1)

Be redundant. Then, say the same thing over again.

Just because you state your most powerful benefit in the headline doesn't mean you shouldn't say it over again. If you are writing a long sales letter (especially one made for quick scanning), you should repeat the main benefits to make sure you get your point across. After all, many readers need to read the same thing several times before they catch on.

Big Ol' Tip #2)

Focus on the guarantee. I promise you won't regret it.

Your readers are reading for one very simple reason: they're looking for a reason to buy. Give them the best reason possible. One good reason for buying is the assurance that customers will be protected against making a bad decision. If they're interested in your product, and making a purchase has no negative consequences, then you've got a sale. A guarantee removes negative consequences.

Big Ol' Tip #3)

Conceal the price. How? I'll tell you in a minute.

Don't state the price up-front. Reveal the price only after the customer calls a number, sends in a reply card, makes contact by e-mail, or reads (or scans) all the way to the end of your sales letter. By not revealing the price immediately, you have a chance to demonstrate to readers the value of what's behind the price before they have a chance to set their mind against it. (Note: If low price is your product's primary selling point, this tip might not apply. Test and see.)

These tips will improve your sales letter by making it more readable, more persuasive, and less intimidating to your audience. Use them in a well written piece and you'll see a big ol' increase in your response rates.

Know What Matters Most About PR?

When, as a business, non-profit or association manager, you are able to persuade your key external stakeholders to your way of thinking, then move them to take actions that lead to your department, division or subsidiary's success.

And again when those outside stakeholder behaviors deliver results like more people returning to buy again, new prospects sniffing around, individual capital gift levels rising, or more inquiries arriving about strategic alliances and joint ventures.

It especially matters when the emphasis of the PR team assigned to your unit shifts from communications tactics to a comprehensive blueprint that leads to your personal success as a unit manager. Particularly as it demands of you a sharper focus on the very groups of outside people who play a major role in just HOW successful a manager you will be ? your key external audiences.

But, what really matters most about your public relations is the foundation on which you build your program. For example, one like this: people act on their own perception of the facts before them, which leads to predictable behaviors about which something can be done. When we create, change or reinforce that opinion by reaching, persuading and moving-to-desired-action the very people whose behaviors affect the organization the most, the public relations mission is accomplished.

How you implement such a fundamental premise is the enduring key to success. Discuss it with your PR team, especially the importance of learning how your organization is perceived by those target audience members. It should be obvious to all concerned that those perceptions almost always result in predictable behaviors that can help or hinder your operation.

You need to interact with members of the key target audience and ask a lot of questions. "Do you know anything about us? What do you think of our services, products or people, if anything? Have we ever worked together on a project? Was it a positive experience? Do you have any kind of problem with us?"

If budget is not a problem, you can hire a professional survey firm to gather these data. Or, since your PR people are already in the perception and behavior business, you can put them to work doing this very important work.

Whoever does the perception monitoring work should stay alert for negativities, especially attitudes and voice levels. Watch carefully for untruths, misconceptions, inaccuracies or rumors.

Once gathered, these data will form the basis of your public relations goal. Sometimes, the goal is extremely sensitive and specific. Other times, it can be as straightforward as "clarify that misconception, correct that inaccuracy or stifle that rumor."

Since a goal without a strategy is like a pizza without a beer, you may choose from three strategies usually applied to a perception or opinion problem. Create perception where there isn't any, change existing opinion, or reinforce it. Always see to it that the strategy you select is an obvious and natural fit with your new public relations goal.

A burning need for writing ability surfaces here because you must prepare a really effective message if you are going to alter any negative perceptions among members of your target audience. Your PR team should be able to handle this assignment just fine, in particular the need for persuasiveness and a compelling writing style. It must be clearly written with excellent factual support if your message is to be believable and result in the altered perception you desire.

Message delivery, fortunately, is a simple matter as you select from among the long list of communiucations tactics available to you. You may choose media interviews, speeches or group briefings, or from among newsletters, emails or brochures. Just be certain the tactics you pick can prove they actually reach people like those in your target audience.

The question of whether progress is being made will surface rather quickly so prepare asap to again interact with, and question members of your target audience. Only this time, you'll be alert for indications that the negativities have been dealt with and that target audience perception is moving in your direction.

Should you feel the need to accelerate matters, you can always add a few new communications tactics, and increase their frequencies.

It seems safe to say right here that what matters most about public relations is your survival as a manager who uses PR to help reach his or her objectives. Which is precisely why PR demands of you a sharper focus on the very groups of people who play a major role in just HOW successful a manager you will be ? your key external audiences.

Learning Disabilities

There are so many learning labels floating around these days ... A.D.D., A.D.H.D., Dyslexia, etc. Basically, these are labels pinned on children who are in some way learning disabled. I think most of these kids are learning advanced, but I'll try to stick to the facts ... somewhat ... ;-)

Children who cannot sit still or are disruptive in a classroom environment are sometimes suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.) When they are also extremely hyper, they earn the tag of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (A.D.H.D.) When children are prone to twisting their letters and numbers around, they are often called Dyslexic.

There are definitely some children who need medication to control their out-of-control emotions or actions. There are some who have a serious chemical imbalance, preventing them from blending with others in a socially acceptable manner. And there are the kids who really have a hard time keeping numbers straight or learning to read in a typical classroom setting with standard teaching methods. These children are learning disabled in that they do need resources and other methods to help them learn basic lessons and needed skills such as reading, writing, adding and subtracting.

These wonderfully different kids are also usually very bright, artistic and unusual in amazing ways. They can be willful, temperamental and sad or they can be sweet, loving and joyful. I believe they are what we, their parents and caretakers, teach them they should be. I also believe they are a big part of our future, among the children of this world who will be our brightest stars. They are the kids who do not see everything in terms of black and white or up and down. They see blue, purple and fuchsia where everyone else sees the norm. They hear melodies not yet created. They envision buildings not yet designed. They are learning disabled only because they do not learn as the majority of us do. They see life through a set of eyes and ears not limited by structure or regimentation. They feel and capture life with fingers that expound the essence of velvet and toes that glorify the silkiness of sand. They feel sadness and joy through hearts that swell with the beauty of sunsets and melt with compassion for the underdog.

These children are the different ones among us. They should be honored for their uniqueness. Unfortunately, they are more likely to be labeled and boxed into a problem corner, snuffing out their bright lights and destroying their self-esteem at a tender age.

We have known and still know quite a few of these different kids. I don't know one child who is not amazingly bright in one or more areas of life that most of us are stymied by. They are exceptional artists, musically genius, enormously big-hearted or mature beyond their years. One is on Ritalin and thanks his mother daily for giving him the chance to get straight 'A's as he always knew he could. One is an outstanding athlete who will most likely make the Olympic team in the not-too-distant future. Another is an accomplished pianist and songwriter at 12 years of age. All of these children have some pretty wicked learning disabilities and they are all just the best kids one could hope to know and love. They are awesome!

Some public schools have excellent resource programs for the learning disabled child. Most private schools do not have the room or the inclination to support a resource curriculum, however, there are private schools that cater only to learning disabled children. These schools can be frightfully expensive but many are the only hope some children will ever have for academic success. One girl we know came home from her first day at one of these high-priced schools elated and said: "I'm finally learning something!" Wow ... her mother told me this with tears in her eyes. This school has a variety of classroom environments, each supporting a different learning style. Their philosophy is that children learn differently, be it auditory, visual (the normal school methods cater to visual) or tactile. The children are grouped with other like-learning kids to create auditory, visual or tactile-learning classrooms. Obviously, they are on to something.

Parents with learning disabled children need to work with their kids, helping with homework and assignments more than average. If you are the parent of a learning disabled child, there are resources available today that were not around just a few years ago. Know that there is help for your child and for you. Ask your child's school about resource programs, recommended methods of working with your child at home and any other useful information they can and will give you. And remember that your child is probably going to grow up to become one of the more valued members of society if they are gently guided and helped through the beginning years of academic training.

Do You Qualify for a Loan?

Like most people, you will probably wait until submitting a purchase contract on a home before applying for a mortgage. By then, not only will you know the specific property you want, but also how much you need to borrow. At that point, the lender will require that you fill out a loan application and reveal specific information about your current and past financial situations.

The following checklist is a good place to start for gathering the information you will need:

Original purchase contract (the loan officer will make a copy and return the original to you)

Copy of earnest money (deposit) cancelled check

Employment history details

Last two years' W-2 forms

Last two years' income tax returns

Paycheck stubs for past 30 days

Verification of secondary income (for example, investment accounts, bonuses, a part-time job, child support or social security income)

Assets: Account numbers, balances and branch addresses

Checking

Savings

Stocks/bonds (current market values)

Debts: Account numbers and addresses

Auto loan(s)

Boat loan(s)

Student loan(s)

Credit card

Other

Pre-qualifying vs. Pre-approval If at all possible, it is best to begin the loan approval process before you find the home of your dreams. Otherwise, you may hit a roadblock when you apply for a mortgage and the application is denied. If the seller has other buyers waiting, or needs to sell quickly, you may lose your chance for that particular property.

There are two ways to help avoid this scenario:

1.) Become pre-qualified for a loan: All you need to do is speak to a lender, who-based on asking you some questions about your finances-offers an opinion of the loan amount you are eligible to borrow. The lender doesn't ask for any supporting paperwork to confirm what you say, and can change his or her mind when you come back to apply for a loan. There's no charge for pre-qualification.

2.) Become pre-approved for a loan: This process is more complex and sometimes involves a fee. The lender will want information about your employment, income and debts to prove that you are a good risk.

Obviously, a lender's pre-approval letter carries more weight with a seller than a pre-qualification letter because it is proof of your buying power on paper. Being pre-approved gives you an advantage when you're among several buyers pursuing a property.

Pay off other loans.

If at all possible, consider paying off any high-interest loans before applying for a mortgage. The more debts-like car loans or credit card balances-that appear on your mortgage application, the smaller the loan amount the lender will be willing to offer.

Don't pull a Pinocchio!

Never inflate your income or lie about employment dates. Not only is it illegal to falsify documents, it's also a federal offense! And lenders can usually catch people who lie or greatly exaggerate information on their applications. If you lie, you will most likely get what you were trying to avoid all along, a denial for your loan.
